Against a backdrop of the Southern Alps, famed for their outdoor activities, Wānaka has quietly emerged as one of New Zealand’s prime wellness destinations. Along with breathtaking alpine scenery, reflected in its crystal-clear lake, and its laid-back pace of life, the town offers more than just postcard-perfect views. This is a place where visitors come not just to explore the outdoors, but also to kick back, reset, and reconnect with themselves.
Wānaka’s wellness scene has grown in tandem with its long list of adventure activities. Boutique spas, lakeside yoga studios, outdoor hot tubs, and alpine saunas have become part and parcel of the town’s identity, giving visitors and locals the chance to experience a unique blend of relaxation and nature. A Wānaka holiday can now balance physical exertion with gentle movement, adrenalin rushes with mindfulness, and transform stress into recovery and rejuvenation.
In a destination defined by outdoor adventure, it might be a surprise to discover this balance. But picture yourself sinking into a hot tub, warming up in a sauna, or stretching through a gentle yoga session after a day carving the powder, striking up mountain trails or peddling across rocky terrain. Or imagine a retreat where you do just that – step back from your daily grind and soak up the alpine landscape as you relax and unwind.

Get into the water
Soaking in warm water does wonders for the mind, and if you add some of the most beautiful views on South Island, you have the ultimate relaxation. You’ll find plenty of Wānaka hot tub and spa experiences, as well as opportunities to enjoy kicking back in natural waters.
Hot water and spas in Wānaka
Soak up the views – LandEscape has wood-fired hot tubs, filled with local spring water and placed in strategic locations for the best views by day or night. Up to five people can soak for four hours.
Relax those muscles and chill – the local wellness spa offers massages – perfect for those tired desk shoulders from home or those aching quads from the ski slopes – and a thermal circuit for up to 4 people. We could stay in the Japanese soak tub for hours!
Combine the benefits – due to open in 2026, O-Studio is opening a wellness centre in Wānaka where floatation tanks, sauna and massage treatments can enjoyed under one roof
Not quite a hot tub
Swimming facilities at Wānaka Community Pool include a hot pool for adults, maybe not the quietest option, but a good one for you to take time out while the kids mess around in the other water. Check out children’s activities during school holidays for extra relaxation time!
Water au naturel
Like the spring water in some of the hot tubs, Wānaka has plenty of other naturally watery spots to take time out. Wānaka Lake is the obvious choice in the warmer months, but we also like:
Arethusa Pool – this lake on Mou Waho Island on Lake Wānaka is perhaps the most unusual spot to chill in water. Lake charters will get you there, or you can reach it by private boat. If you have your own steam, head for this pool first or last thing to avoid the biggest crowds.
Blue Pools – the turquoise waters in these pools in Makarora flow pretty and chilly. Jump in these glacial waters for instant mind-sharpening!
Lake Hāwea – just as pretty as Lake Wānaka, but without the crowds, these waters with perhaps the most spectacular alpine backdrop are good for getting away from everything.
Villas with hot tubs
It doesn’t get much better than lying in a hot tub, a glass of local wine in our hand as we watch the sun set over Lake Wānaka. And of course, it’s just us and our favourite others.
Booking a holiday home with its own spa pool adds luxury, privacy and convenience – no need to book, just step in whenever you fancy. Take it to the next level with a sunrise soak or stargazing bath.
If this sounds like your idea of paradise, too, check these out for some inspiration:
- The Banya – a secluded couple’s retreat with a private spa pool.
- Mount Isthmus – uber-modern mountain retreat with hot tub.
- The Clearview House – lakeside accommodation with private spa pool.
In-villa wellness
When you stay at one of our holiday homes, you can book an in-house massage service, tailored to suit you in your own time. Contact us to find out more.
Chill in the steam
The Finish nailed it when they combined dry hot steam with a dip in icy water, an experience mirrored in Wānaka. These are our favourite saunas:
The Secret Sauna – a great spot for couples on Lake Hāwea, where you can sit back in the steam contemplating the mountains before you dive into the water. Private sauna sessions are available for up to eight people, perfect for a group activity.
The Sauna – back by Lake Wānaka, this sauna takes its inspiration from Finland, with wood-fired heat and mountain and lake views. Make it even more relaxing with a meditation and breathwork session.
Pilates and Yoga studios in Wānaka
Join locals for indoor or outdoor yoga sessions, often in locations with lake and mountain views, for the perfect way to unwind and relax on your holiday. Our go-to centres include:
Hot Yoga Fusion – this centre offers three types of yoga, including a fusion where the mercury rises to 38ºC. Casual classes with mat hire are available, perfect if you’re just in town for a short stay.
Physio Wānaka – you can drop in for a pilates class (map or reformer) at this centre, where physio is also available in case you overdo it on the slopes or trails.
Retreats NZ – an excellent option if you fancy a full package, with year-round retreats in Wānaka (from three days), exploring meditation and yoga.
