A great couple’s holiday doesn’t need a complicated pitch. You want somewhere beautiful, somewhere private, somewhere the days feel longer, and the noise of normal life genuinely fades. New Zealand delivers all of that — and in the Southern Lakes high country around Wānaka, it delivers it in a landscape that stops people in their tracks. This is a guide to doing it well: choosing the right region, finding the right property, and building a trip that gives you back something a standard hotel break rarely does. Time, space, and the chance to actually be somewhere together.
Why New Zealand is made for two
Time spent somewhere genuinely beautiful, with only enjoyment and experience on the agenda, has a way of reminding you why you travel together in the first place. It doesn’t need to be elaborate. It needs privacy, a decent view, and enough unstructured time that you’re not just moving from one scheduled thing to the next. That sounds simple. It’s also, in practice, surprisingly hard to find, which is really why this guide exists.
New Zealand offers this intimate, laidback travel style in its own unique way. It is, by almost any measure, one of the world’s great romantic destinations. Not because of candlelit restaurants or luxury spas (though those exist, and they are excellent), but because of its extraordinary landscape and the effect that scenery has on people. Something about being this far from everywhere, surrounded by this much raw beauty, makes ordinary things feel meaningful again.
The country has also, in recent years, quietly repositioned itself as a destination for slow travel — the antidote to the packed itinerary and the ticked-off bucket list. You’ll especially find this accessible and welcomed in Wānaka. Visitors are increasingly arriving not to see New Zealand but to inhabit it, even briefly: to cook in a kitchen with a mountain view, to walk a trail at their own pace, to sit on a deck with a glass of Central Otago pinot noir and watch the light change over the lake. For couples, this shift has been transformative. The best retreats here aren’t hotels — they’re private, curated homes in spectacular settings, managed to an exceptional standard, in places that feel discovered rather than developed.
Our team and this guide will help you find yours.
What makes a great couple’s retreat?
Not all romantic getaways are created equal, and it’s worth knowing what separates a truly great couples retreat from a hotel weekend with a pillow menu. Look for these must-haves when choosing where to stay. You’ll find it in the majority of our Wānaka villas and Queenstown holiday apartments.
Genuine privacy – make this your foundation, your own space, your own entrance, no shared walls, and the freedom to be exactly yourselves without an audience.
Stunning setting – go for one that delivers a view, landscape, and quality of light that make simply being there feel like an event in itself.
Home where the heart is – space to spread out, a kitchen to cook in, a living room or balcony to linger in long after dinner. So much better than just a room.
Great experiences on your doorstep – think wine, walking, adventure, and fine dining close enough to access but far enough to ignore when you’d rather not leave.
Where to go in New Zealand
New Zealand’s two main islands offer oppositely different characters, so choosing the right one and the region on it for a couple’s retreat is itself an exercise in knowing yourselves. Here’s what to expect on each.
Northland and the Bay of Islands
The subtropical north is New Zealand at its most romantic: think golden beaches, warm water, sailing between uninhabited islands, and a pace you set (or not).
Best for: couples seeking the sea, warmth, colour, and the occasional oyster.
Hawke’s Bay
Wine country, with long golden summers and a food and wine culture that rivals anything in the Southern Hemisphere.
Best for: couples who consider a well-paired pinot and a long lunch a complete afternoon’s itinerary.
Nelson & the Abel Tasman
The sunniest corner of the South Island comes with golden beaches, clear water, and coastal walks of extraordinary beauty.
Best for: couples who like to move and to swim in warm temperatures.
Queenstown, Wānaka and Central Otago
In the western reaches of Otago, Queenstown and Wānaka, and swathes of the Southern Lakes, have picture-perfect landscapes, outdoor activities galore, but also a laidback vibe that resets even the busiest couple.
Best for: couples seeking a quieter location that delivers beauty, wildness and relaxation.
Central Otago is beautiful in the way that a landscape painting is beautiful: you find yourself looking at it for longer than you meant to, trying to understand why it affects you the way it does and how many times the light on the mountains changed your view while you were gazing.
The region occupies the interior of the South Island, a high, semi-arid basin ringed by mountain ranges and carved by ancient rivers. The Clutha, one of New Zealand’s great waterways, has its source here, running crystal-clear and turquoise from the Southern Alps. Lake Wānaka, at the foot of Mount Aspiring National Park, is where we’re based. So naturally we’re biased in saying that it is particularly lovely here, backed by majestic peaks, snow-capped in season. The skies are big and the light here has a particular quality: clear, high, and golden in the evenings, as anyone sitting in a hot tub with a glass of wine watching the mountains turn amber will discover too.
Dining for two
In Wānaka itself, the dining scene punches well above its population. Think the best coffee in the South Island, a brunch to set you up for that hearty hike up Roys Peak, a home-baked scone to replenish your blood sugar after an exhilarating spell in the powder or a romantic dinner where the level of haute cuisine will take you by surprise at every course.
And then there’s the wine. Central Otago’s wines have a quiet but well-rooted reputation. The region’s cool, high-altitude climate and schist-rich soils produce pinots of remarkable variety, depth and elegance, and the sub-regions of Bannockburn, Gibbston, and Cromwell each bring something slightly different to the glass. Visit a cellar door (or several – Felton Road, Rippon, and Akarua are all worth the detour), or simply ask us for a list of our favourites and let the discovery happen from your own Wānaka base.
Experiences for two
Beyond the hiking, cycling and skiing, Wānaka offers a host of romantic treats, experiences that you’ll both remember forever. For couples in search of an adrenalin rush, take a private scenic flight over Mount Aspiring or the glaciers to the west, or a heli-picnic to a remote ridge accessible by no other means.
For those looking for downtime, book yourselves a couples massage in Wānaka or a sauna session for two. If you’d rather be outdoors, head for one of the area’s pools for perhaps the most refreshing dip in New Zealand. And do book a holiday rental with a hot tub. Read our Wānaka wellbeing guide for more inspo.
Box out
48 hours in Wānaka: an itinerary for two
Based at a holiday villa on the lake, this itinerary is a starting point for a romantic break to remember.
On the first morning, arrive and settle without rushing. Walk the lakefront into town for a late breakfast at Relishes Cafe, and try the savoury French toast. In the afternoon, drive (or ask us to arrange for you to be driven) forty minutes to Bannockburn for a cellar door visit – Felton Road if it’s a weekday and you’ve booked ahead, Mt Difficulty for the view and a gastronomic lunch – and then return via Cromwell’s Heritage Precinct. For dinner, use the property kitchen for a simple meal paired with the wine you bought this afternoon or open the door to the private chef you asked us to arrange. Look out as the mountains going dark beyond the glass once the sun has set, if the sky is clear, go outside and look up – the Milky Way will be waiting. No further instructions are necessary.
On the second morning, leave by 5.30am (or earlier) for Roys Peak with head torches and good layers. Three hours to the summit, arriving as the sun crests the Buchanan Peaks – possibly one of the most romantic things to do in Wānaka. The view is worth every step. Back by lunchtime for a long shower, a platter of favourite produce picked up in town, and a moment to appreciate your day so far. In the afternoon, rent a paddleboard or kayak on the lake, or walk the lake track as far as feels right, finishing with a hot chocolate at Patagonia Chocolates. In the evening, book ahead at Kika or Bistro Gentil for something seasonal and considered, and linger.
Where to stay in Wānaka for couples
Our carefully curated portfolio of holiday homes sit in and around Wānaka, Queenstown, Arrowtown and Central Otago. We’ve selected each for its specification – expect quality standards throughout – for its character, its relationship with the landscape, and its capacity to deliver that particular feeling of being somewhere that is genuinely, completely, yours.
That feeling is especially important if you’re holidaying as a couple. Our portfolio has plenty of holiday homes for two, such as these:
Mantells – luxury in architecture and views
Best for: couples who love architectural design and want to be on Wānaka ’s doorstep
Stay in an exquisitely designed apartment, where art and style come into their own, while outside, Lake Wānaka and the Southern Alps frame your views. The location couldn’t be better either – you’re within easy reach of Wānaka township, but private enough to make the holiday just about you.
What couples say about Mantells: “Words cannot describe our spacious and luxury the apartment is or do justice to the many special features. The apartment is so perfect and the views so stunning you won’t want to leave.” (Meredith and Roger, from Melbourne, Australia) Book your stay
The Banya – modern design overlooking Lake Wānaka
Best for: couples seeking seclusion but proximity to Wānaka and a hot tub
Get away from it all at this uber- modern retreat – we could almost call it a log cabin except that it’s spacious – set in woodlands overlooking Lake Wānaka . Contemplate the views from your private deck or the spa pool.
What couples say about the Banya: “Our stay at the Banya was everything we’d hoped for. A perfect secluded couples stay with incredible views.” (Nicole, Australia) Book your stay
Rangers Retreat – luxury seclusion with views
Best for: couples looking for their own patch, all in stunning surroundings
Experience true seclusion at a luxury cottage, set in rolling countryside, with snow-capped mountains on the horizon. Lake Hawea and Lake Wānaka townships might be just a short drive away, but you’ll find yourself at one with nature in this utterly peaceful location.
What couples say about Rangers Retreat: “All in all, a relaxing re-set and a wonderful few days – retreat is the correct word to describe the place.” (Naintara, Australia) Book your stay
The romantic splurge
If there is one experience in Central Otago that justifies the phrase “once in a lifetime,” it is the Mountain Kitchen. Your pilot takes you on a spectacular scenic helicopter flight from Wānaka , landing on the mountains en route, before taking you to lunch at the world-renowned Minaret Station. Expect to dine on local deliciousness paired with award-winning regional wines. This is a very good answer to the question of how to mark the kind of occasion that deserves more than a restaurant.
Planning your couples retreat: practical essentials
The logistics of a New Zealand holiday are simpler than they might appear on the map. Here is what you need to know.
Getting to Wānaka
The nearest international airport is Queenstown, approximately one hour’s drive from Wānaka via State Highway 6, a road that is itself one of the more beautiful drives in the country. Dunedin Airport, two hours to the south, offers a quieter entry point and the opportunity for a scenic drive north through the Clutha Valley. Rental cars are available at both airports; having your own vehicle in Wānaka is strongly recommended for full flexibility.
How far in advance to book
Our Wānaka holiday homes – particularly the lakefront options – book up quickly in the peak summer months of January and February, over the Christmas and New Year period, and during school holidays. For these periods, booking three to six months in advance is advisable.
The shoulder seasons (March–May and September–November) offer more flexibility and are, in many respects, the most rewarding times to visit. Winter availability varies by property, but it is worth checking – some properties are at their most atmospheric in July and August.
What to put in your suitcase
Like much of New Zealand, Central Otago’s weather conditions can change quickly regardless of season, but perhaps more rapidly because of our high altitude. The key to packing is layers, whatever the time of year.
In summer, sun protection is a must whether you’re by the lake or up high, and a warm layer for evenings is always useful. In winter, pack merino base layers, a waterproof outer shell, and if you’re hiking, footwear appropriate for snow. You won’t need anything formal – the dress code across Wānaka’s restaurant scene ranges from smart casual downwards, and nobody expects a jacket and tie.
Make that couple’s retreat real
The hardest part of a retreat is not the packing, or the planning, or even the cost. It is the decision, that moment of saying yes to the thing you’ve been meaning to do, and committing to the calendar before the next thing fills it.
Wānaka will reward that decision generously. This part of New Zealand doesn’t consciously try to impress you but ends up impressing you enormously as a result. It has a way of arriving in your memory quietly and staying there: a morning on a lake, a path up a ridge, a glass of wine in a hot tub with a view that made you put the glass down and just look.
Our Release NZ properties exist to give you access to that experience in its fullest, most private, and most considered form. The properties in our portfolio are chosen for their capacity to be, temporarily, home — and what they offer is not accommodation but a way of being somewhere that most holidays never quite manage.
The mountains will be there when you arrive. The lake will be doing what it always does. The pinot will be exceptional. All that’s required of you is to arrive.
