Creating family memories

Wānaka is a fantastic destination for a family summer holiday, with plenty of activities to suit all ages. Here’s a brief guide to making the most of your stay:

Outdoor Adventures

Lake Wānaka: Enjoy swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, or simply relaxing by the lake’s edge. Roys Bay is a popular spot for families, or head out to Glendhu Bay, which is about a 15min drive.

Hiking and Walking Trails: Eely Point Track is a gentle lakeside walk perfect for young kids, pack a picnic and turn it into a half day adventure. Or for those with slightly older children and up for more of a challenge, the Mount Iron Track is a local favourite with fantastic views.

Bike Rides: Rent bikes and explore trails like the Waterfall Creek Track which is flat and family-friendly. Or there’s the Outlet Track along side the Clutha River, which is a little more challenging. There’s also a junior bike park located at Eely Point, featuring natural stone jumps & raised wooden boardwalks.

Family-Friendly Attractions

Puzzling World: Providing fun for all ages for over 50yrs. A mix of optical illusions, a maze, and interactive exhibits. It’s great for kids and adults alike.

Wānaka Lavender Farm: Explore the beautiful gardens, visit the animals, and enjoy lavender ice cream.

Cinema Paradiso: Catch a family movie in this quirky cinema with couches and freshly baked cookies at during the interval.

Water Activities

Lake Cruise: Take a scenic boat ride heading to Mou Waho Island, where you can discover a lake within a lake. Try and spot the rare flightless Buff Weka (extinct on the mainland since 1920).

Water Sports: Rent paddle boards, kayaks, or jet skis for some fun on the water.

Day Trips

Cardrona: Take the family to the historic Cardrona Hotel which is open for breakfast, lunch & dinner.

Lake Hāwea: A short drive from Wānaka, this lake is quieter but equally stunning, perfect for a day of relaxation.

Dining with Kids

Amigos: This family friendly restaurant opening in Wānaka in 1995. Serving burritos, nachos, tacos & all things Mexican. Plenty of kid-friendly options.

Patagonia Chocolates: Treats like ice cream, chocolates, and coffee for parents.

Food Trucks: Head to Brownston Street for casual, family-friendly dining. Lots of choice including pizza, burgers, burritos and more.

Tips for Families

• Bring plenty of sunscreen and hats for the sunny days.
• Book activities like cruises and accommodation in advance, as summer can be busy.
• Pack for varied weather, as conditions can change quickly.
