In terms of the outdoors, the lake is five minutes from most properties, and Roys Peak and the Diamond Lake circuit are accessible from the township without a car. Outside peak holiday season (high winter and summer), the crowds thin and the town settles into a rhythm that rewards people who are staying for a while rather than passing through.

Working remotely from New Zealand: what you need to know
New Zealand does not currently offer a dedicated digital nomad visa. What it does offer is a visitor visa that permits remote work, provided your employer, company or client is based outside the country. The distinction is vital because you cannot take on work from a New Zealand employer or client on a visitor visa. Depending on the visitor visa type, you can stay up to 6 or 9 months.
Single-entry visitor visa: allows a stay of up to 9 months within 18 months. It’s suited to remote workers planning one continuous period in New Zealand, with no requirement to leave and re-enter (if you leave before your 9-month stay is up, your visa expires automatically).
Multiple-entry visitor visa: allows a stay of up to 6 months within every 12 months, allowing you to leave and re-enter the country within that period. Better suited to those who may need to travel outside New Zealand during their stay.
Visitor visa requirements
To qualify, you need to prove the following (as correct in June 2026):
- Good health – a medical certificate isn’t usually necessary, but you may need to provide one.
- Good character – police certificates from the countries where you’re a citizen and those where you have spent more than five years since you were 17.
- Genuine reasons to come to New Zealand – plans to stay temporarily and leave at the end, willingness to comply with the visa conditions and evidence of your work plans, including information about the employment you will do during your stay.
- Sufficient funds – at least NZ$1,000 a month (NZ$400 if you have secured accommodation).
- Leaving at the end of your stay – a return flight or enough money to buy one.
