Stay 4 pay 3 nights
As we hit the middle of the cold Winter season, it means Spring is not far away. The days are gingerly edging just that little bit closer to becoming that wee bit longer & lighter. Here at Release Wanaka we LOVE this time of year, as the colours begin to pop in all forms from vibrant bright yellow daffodils, to the light pink hues of the cherry blossoms flower clusters. We also think it’s a great time of year to visit Wanaka, not only is there still the option of Spring skiing in September, but it’s also time to clean the dust off the mountain bikes & the hiking shoes and get ready to hit the trails.
It’s also quiet, so there has never been a better excuse to plan a Spring holiday & explore what our beautiful town has to offer.
Book your Wanaka getaway: Stay 4 nights & pay for 3!
If you need convincing, we’ve put together a list of our top 5 outdoor activities (alternative to skiing) that you absolutely need to experience for yourselves during your next trip to Wanaka.
Oxbow Adventure Co
If a sense of adventure is your thing then look no further than Oxbow Adventure Co. Take a ride in the world’s only 4 seater Jet Sprint boat, accelerating from 0-100km in a staggering 2.5 seconds! This is a thrill you do not want to miss as your expert driver skillfully navigates around a series of islands on their purpose built lake. It takes jet boating to the next level & will not disappoint even the biggest adventure junkie!
Eco Adventure Wanaka
If you still like the idea of a boat ride but without the intensity, then a half day cruise/hike with Eco Adventure Wanaka is the one for you. Heading out to Mou Waho island this trip perfectly combines a lake cruise, nature walk, wildlife encounter & outstanding panoramic views. Once on the island, your eco guide will draw your attention to the varied native plants & birdlife, including the rare & very inquisitive flightless bird the Buff Weka, which has been extinct on mainland NZ since 1920.
NZ Bike Trails
If you’re happy being outdoors but like to go at your own pace, then bike the Dunstan Trail with NZ Bike Trails. The Lake Dunstan Cycling Trail was opened in May 2021 & is one of New Zealand’s great cycle trails. It’s a 42km (or 55km depending on where you start) self-guided e-bike ride which, including stops, will take you around 4-5 hours. The trail traverses through some of Central Otago’s most dramatic landscapes, featuring Bannockburn wineries, heritage towns Cromwell & Clyde & the Kawarau River & Clutha Rivers.
Pembroke Patisserie
Another choice to include the legs, would be to either walk or bike along the Outlet track & head to Pembroke Patisserie. You could either start out at the Wanaka Lakefront (approximately 12+kms) or drive to the Outlet Camping Ground (approximately 5kms). It’s a popular track for walking, fishing or having a picnic & enjoying the peace & quiet. The reward waiting for you at the end is freshly baked pastries, breads & cakes served with a barista made coffee.
Wanaka Wine Tours
If you still want to get out & view the scenery but don’t want to put in the leg work, then take a half day tour with Wanaka Wine Tours. Opt for one of their small or private group tours taking you to 4 of the local boutique vineyards, whilst exploring the scenery & the history of the area. Let your guide take you to sample some of the best food & wine of the Wanaka & Central Otago region as you enjoy someone else doing all the driving.
